“An Apsara is a female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist culture. … In Indian mythology, apsaras are beautiful, supernatural female beings. They are youthful and elegant, and superb in the art of dancing.” Wikipedia
The bas reliefs carved into the famous temples of Angkor Wat feature thousands of these heavenly beings and captivate millions of visitors every year. We wanted a name for the boat that would be feminine, exotic, and tropical while incorporating Kalyan’s home country and our experiences together. Several other “Apsaras” are apparently sailing the ocean blue, though we have yet to run across any of them!
The design of the logo on the top of our web page is the word Apsara as written in Khmer language. While searching for a graphic for our new spinnaker, we did not find any of the available drawings of apsara dancers very appealing. Finally we hit upon the idea of simply using the Khmer script for “Apsara” as a logo and we think it will look beautiful inked onto our new red spinnaker.
