MEET THE CREW

CAPTAIN

Ben: Growing up in Alaska, our summers were spent on the water enjoying scenery, wildlife, and running sailing and kayaking charters.  Years later, my father, brother Peter and I sailed our Amel Maramu “Resolute” from Alaska to Patagonia.  I promised myself that when our family was old enough, we would go cruising again.  Our first attempt at the South Pacific was thwarted by COVID, but Apsara has served us well on many summer adventures throughout the Gulf of Alaska and is ready for so much more. And so am I.

FIRST MATE

Kalyan: The first time I was introduced to boats was in 2002 when I first visited Ben in Seattle. It was a new challenge for me in the beginning since I didn’t grow up with boats in Cambodia.

Since then, I’ve gained more confidence of maneuvering the boat and spent a lot of time with our family exploring many different places around the Gulf of Alaska, Mexico, and Hawaii.

SWABS

Jasmine: Hi! I’m that daughter that believes she’s related to Poseidon. Back at home, I spend my time going to school, swimming, doing homework, some more homework, and if I have a little more time, some homework. But when I’m on the boat, I can slow down and pick up all the books I’ve been wanting to read. I can pretend I’m Moana and sing the whole soundtrack while sitting on deck. I can watch some new TV shows I’ve been wanting to watch while the rain pours down. The boat and Billy Joel both tell me to, “slow down, you’re doing fine. You can’t be everything you want to be before your time.”

Jessica: I was born in 2012, and since then, I’ve spent a lot of my life on Apsara. 2019-2020 was a big year for the boat, starting the website and our 7-month trip. We’ve been on the boat several times after and each time is always fun. At home, I often go climbing twice a week with my team, play violin and piano, and also call friends and play video games. When I’m on the boat, I read more, play games with my family and my sister, and walk on the beach with our dogs. Being on Apsara with my family is always a happy place for me, sailing is a big part of my life and some of my personality, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
